Nicolas Caloia

Nicolas Caloia is a bass player and double-bass player as well as an improviser and composer. He studied with Lysle Ellis and Fred Hopkins and has taken part in many projects, one of which was The John Cage Project with Malcolm Goldstein. He has played with a number of Maghrebian groups, including Timgad, and with the musician Saïd Mesnaoui, with whom he recorded La montagne. He has collaborated principally with Chris Cauley, Susie Arioli, Michel F. Côté, and Sam Shalabi, and he has also directed his own ensemble, The Ratchet Orchestra. He composed and played the music for dancer Tammy Forsythe’s most recent work. He is now working with Hassan El Hadi and is playing in a trio with John Heward and Chris Burn. He is a member of the Canot-camping and Bruire projects.
